I seem to have 2 contact lists. The one in the left pane appears to be
accurate and up to date. The one in the Standard Toolbar is a different
version and in-accurate. How do I safely remove the toolbar version and
retain the other version?

Clarify your post. You did not include your version, nor is your description
sufficient to discern why you think you have "2 contact lists." The
"Standard Toolbar" does not contain a link to your Contacts Folder. Convince
us it does.

Version is Outlook 2003 - SP2

When I view the Contacts list in the left pane it has all the current
information. When I view the Address Book in the toolbar it is a different
version of the Contact List. When I address an E-Mail it opens the same
version as the Address Book in the toolbar.

Then by definition you have configured your Outlook Address Book view to
display a different folder than the one you link to from your Navigation
pane. Examine the settings of the Outlook Address Book to see how you
configured it if you don't remember.
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change. >

The list was configured properly, which I confirmed. I then re-started the
computer and the 2 lists were then the same - go figure.
