I need to print about 50 copies of a book with 500 pages, 8.5x11, printed on
both sides (1000 printed pages). Black and white text only

What would be the best printer to use? Are there any cheap duplex laser
printers?

I have a duplex inkjet and none duplex laser. I always feel it is just as
easy to print one side then put in again and print on reverse side. It is
faster.

Get some quotes from book printers as an alternative to printing it
yourself. 50,000 copies is a pretty big run for do-it-yourself. Real
printers can also do the covers, binding, etc. You don't want to use
a cheap printer for this.

The HP LaserJet 2200D is a duplex printer, and not terribly expensive.

Printing this many copies either single sided or double sides is not
feasible from a cost standpoint. Print one copy, single sided if you like.
Then have them photo statically copied, double sided and collated at
places like Officemax or Kinkos.
