Duo (Core) vs. Pentium speed

I'm slowly considering a new system with Duo Core (Intel). One advantage -
a temperature (much lower). But, my concern is how this new processor speed
(& effectiveness) compares to P4s? What I see those "2s" have nominal speed
around 1.6 MHz. Does someone tried to compare it or had some usual
experience to share with me?

While the clock speeds are different, the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo (you
should aim for this latter one for a desktop machine) are considerably more
efficient than the Pentium 4, hence a lower clock speed Core 2 Duo will
outperform Pentium 4 chips with a much faster clock speed.

Same question with some background. I use XP strictly for internet access
on dialup, and newsgroups. I don't download large files ever anymore from
the internet. I use Windows ME for some older MS games and banking software
(no internet). I use 98SE for burning CDs/DVDs (no internet). What gain
would I see with all 3 OSes,especially ME/98SE if the motherboard has not
drivers for those 2 OSes? Using a P4 2.4 GHz, 1GB RAM, drivers for all 3
OSes. What about the additional cost of the different type of RAM used on
the motherboards used currently, can't use the old RAM (DDR vs DDR2)? Would
rather do a motherboard swap if appropropriate and cost effective, and would
be of some usefulnesss to me.

With the drivers you'd probably see little difference, as I suspect those
OSes already have ample room to do their stuff on the computer you describe
below. Without proper drivers you'll have problems for sure.

For what you describe, I wouldn't rush to change things. A new computer is
always nice and fun but what you've described for your use of the computer
is going to be taken care of well enough with what you have already.

If I was buying a new computer I'd certainly look to get DDR2 memory and the
latest dual core CPUs to ensure the new computer lasted a while and was a
good base to expand on in the future, but you won't really see a difference
for what you do now. In my opinion you don't appear to have any need to do
anything except sit back and enjoy using your computer as it is.
