Ok, now I know there must be a simple explanation for this. But right now I
am at a loss.
I am trying to figure out how to take care of 2 things here. 1) Around ea.
desktop icon name is
what looks like a colored (blue) box. How do I turn this off so that just
the lettering displays?
2) I installed 1 program (after uninstalling), plus upgraded another
(Quicktime).
In my Start menu both of these prog. groups and progs. in the group are both
sort of shaded
(light tan?). What's that all about? How do I clear that out so it looks
like all the rest?

TIA...

Right click Empty space on desktop,
POint to Arrange icons by,
Untick "Lock Web items on Desktop".
~~~~~
If that doesn't solve then :
Right click Desktop,
Properties,
Desktop tab,
Customize Desktop button,
Web tab,
Uncheck all options.
~~~~~
If that doesn't solve then:
Control Panel,
System,
Advanced tab,
First Settings button,
Scroll down and Tick "Use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop".

Uncheck "Highlight newly installed programs".

Thanks Ayush,
I knew I could find an ans. here.
For the 2nd part your ans. was dead on. For the 1st part of quest. I had to
use option 3.
