I have read that sites should not have redirects. I know I should know this,
but what is a redirect? I have click "here" at the bottom of some of my
pages to take them to the next page, is that a redirect?
Thanks so much,
Susie

You click on a link to page A and you wind up on page B because when page A
loads it redirects you to page B. Don' do dat.

back back back back ok maybe.

| Ah but, but....
|
| It makes using the back button so much fun.

I think there are situations where a redirect is the proper thing to do.

For example, if the desired page has been moved to a different site the
redirect will take the visitor to the proper location. Some webmasters
don't bother to periodically validate the links on their site and send
people off to obsolete urls. The redirect helps to minimize this problem.

Thank you Steve and Murray!

I got out just in time.

Say, while we are on the topic...you know when you Google something and you
then go to that page and get trapped? Back button doesn't work...how do they
do that? I just hate when they do that. Was just wondering how.

But then you would do this redirect server-side, and that's OK to do since
the local browser is unaware of it, and the page doing the redirection never
gets added to the history queue.

I do that frequently with .htaccess, or with ISAPIRewrite....

I'm not sure how that happens in those cases. It will surely happen with a
meta refresh redirect, since the page that is redirecting is in the history
queue. Press the back button, you go back to the page, and bam you are
redirected again.... But I'm pretty sure they are not doing it that way.

Makes sense technically...in any event it's nasty and annoying.

| Yep.
