Dumb question or Gray hair moment

I remember a while back some one asking about
global search and replace within html with FrontPage.

I "think" I remember several answers saying it took a third party app.
Upon checking the new features for 2003, I noticed that it has
this listed as a new feature.

Did I read this wrong, because 2002 has this capability. I used it the
other day to replace 5 hyperlink urls in about 30 pages in about 5 minutes.

Am I having a gray hair moment???
( or was it "one to many" Miller Lites here in the "home office"?? )

regards
Steve

FrontPage 2002 does have that functionality. However, it has been
completely revamped in 2003 and the new functionality and power of it will
blow your socks off!

The GLOBAL feature I mentioned as a WANT was a reference to expanding the
boudaries beyond the subweb for one to use a facility like Web Compnent
Insert Content Page. This would allow one to have common module located only
within the root of your web site, rather than needing to replicate that same
content using COPY/PASTE or other facilities to each and every subweb for it
to be visible during design, authoring and testing.

Sound like you are remembering FP98.

Or FrontPage 2000 where you had to manually work through it a bit.

FP2003 adds the ability to search using regular expressions. Extremely
powerful.

Does it handle HTML wrapping?

If you search in HTML view for:

This newsletter provides

and it happen to be written in HTML as

This newsletter
provides

FP will not find it or anything on more than one line, so it is current
impossible to search for say a table in HTML view and replace it.

You can search for a table in HTML as long as your search string is in the
same format. For example, if the table looks like this:

<table>
<tr>
<td>&nbsp;</td>
</tr>
</table>

And you search for this:

<table><tr><td>&nbsp;</td></tr></table>

.... it won't be found. The reason is that a line break character is a
character! However, you could write a regular expression that would find
either one.

Also, if you are trying to find and replace information in tables, etc., you
can use HTML Rules to configure your search.

Sorry to jump in... I remember how FP2k2 is like that.

My question that interrupts your postings is: Dreamweaver (4 & MX) allows
you to do global search and replacement w/ html wrapping, does FP2k3 allow
that as well?
i.e., In dreamweaver I highlight this and right click in html view for find
and replace:
<select name="NewsReleaseMenu"
onChange="MM_jumpMenu('parent',this,1)"><option selected>News
Releases</option>
<option value="/nrjuly15-03.html">July 15,2003</option>
<option value="/nrjuly3-03.html">July 3,2003</option>
<option value="/nrjune10-03.html">June 10,2003</option>
<option value="/news.htm">Complete List</option>
</select>

And I set the search for: Ignore Whitespace Differences, not to match Case
and Not to use regular expressions and I search in the entire site. I've
never had a problem with it missing. I can't do this in FrontPage 2002, but
can FP2k3 do this?
(If I don't make any sense today, it's due to working at home w/ wife and
kids hooting and hollering.. lol)

Again, sorry to interrupt.

As long as you have "Ignore whitespace" and "Find in source code" checked,
it will work in 2003. I just tested it with your example.

.... and by the way, if you are searching in an open page, you will not be
able to check "Find in source code". Instead, you simply switch to Code
view.

What's REALLY cool is that after you create a complex find and replace
expression using regular expressions, you can save that query for later use!
FrontPage will save it in XML format so that you can use it later or share
it with someone else.

This site is best viewed..................
...............................with a computer
I use the search and replace in the HTML of FP2k2 all the time, I change a
dropdown box links in about 102 pages everytime a site has an update.
Though, I have found myself checking it with Dreamweaver MX's but have not
found FP to be any different in correctness.

So, I'll leave it for you to decide, grey hair or Miller Lite. But, if you
don't mind sending some of those over here, I'll be happy to do a trial here
and let you know.! :-)
