My task today was to install 60 new Dell PCs to replace 60 1997 vintage
P166s. I looked in AD and zapped all the old machine accounts thinking
that they were the machines in the area I was working....I wish I had double
checked now.....

I sat down to create a RIS image (another long story....). and installed the
machines in the first room OK from it. I then went to the second room and
all machines were going great. However my joy was short lived when one
machine would not go onto the domain for love or money. I reset it and got
it to pull down the image again....still no cigar.

At this point it was 6pm and I was getting annoyed so I chewed out the poor
Dell operator at the end of the phone asking for a replacement PC. During
the call I ripped out the network cable and the PC started working or so I
thought....no domain.....computer locked out.....hmmmmm.....shit!!!!

SO I then started pinging all the machines in that room....ping TC2-22
reply...reply...reply....reply.....!!! strange...I have the cable in my hand
here..... then it suddenly dawned on me, the old TC2-22 was still on and
happily sending packets but where the hell was it? I have not idea so im
gonna have to walk the entire site until I find it and club it to death with
a mallet.....oh and I cannot remote to it because zapping the account hosed
the trust!

BEWARE - ping the old machines before you scrub their accounts from AD,
otherwise it will bite you in the ass later on!

Cheers

Mark (thoroughly annoyed and not looking forward to tomorrow!)

Another tip, don't delete the computer accounts from AD unless the account
is corrupted, doing this means you'll have to rejoin the machine to the
domain.
If you are going to replace the machine, disjoin it from the domain from the
machine and rejoin the new machine to the domain.
