Hello fine fellows,

I would like to make my Sony Vaio laptop run at USB 2.0 speed. Right
now it's at 1.1. The salesman told me that I could upgrade it by
going online. That was four years ago. I have no idea what to do
next.

1. How do I find out if the laptop already has the hardware to
support a USB 2.0?
2. How do I upgrade from 1.1 to 2.0?

Thank you in advance for simply worded responses.

USB 2.0 requires a hardware upgrade, not just new software.
The salesman lied to you. A four year old computer is
starting to get old. Consider saving for a new computer
with the features you want/need. Just don't buy it from the
same salesman or store.

You might contact Sony and ask about a hardware upgrade for
your computer, be sure to tell them model and serial number.
You might also consider a "PCMCIA card USB 2.0 port" Google
finds over 2 million hits and the first page shows many
under $40.

Here is a blonde joke you'll like.
A young blonde girl was riding the bus and reading the
newspaper. The headline said, "12 Brazilian Soldiers Killed
in Combat" She began to cry about the troubled world. She
turned to the stranger net to her and ask, "About how many
is a Brazilian?"

That salesman led you wrong! If by installing Service Pack 1 / 2, you do
not see any USB 2 adapters in Device Manager, then you will need to "buy"
the USB 2.0 hardware to add the ports.

I loved the joke. I'd tell you one back, but the only one I can
remember would get me banned.

I already figured out the salesman was a liar.

4 years is not old. I'm a helluva lot older than that!

So I need to check for USB something in the Device Manager? Precisely
what is it that I should check for?

If your computer is 4 years old, then it does not have USB.

You are looking for "Enhanced USB Controller"

Right click "My Computer", click on the hardware tab, click on Device
Manager, scroll down and click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers, and look
for any of the following:

Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Enhanced Host Controller
USB Enhanced Host Controller, etc.

If you see no reference to Enhanced, you do not have USB.

I have never owned a Vaio, but in other computers I have owned there was a
setting in the BIOS to set the USB ports as standard or Full Speed. If this
is set to the slower setting, then your ports will be USB 1.1 even if they
are capable of USB.

Banned? No one can ban you from USENET.

No, it's not. Any desktop computer since about 1997-98 should have USB
and certainly any laptop since then. You can easily tell but looking for
the USB port on the back of the computer.
So I need to check for USB something in the Device Manager? Precisely
what is it that I should check for?

You need to enter the BIOS setup and make sure that your USB stuff is
enabled. Then once you've enabled it, XP should find it and install some
drivers. For some USB items, you might need to install additional drivers
but you'd likely get a prompt for that when you plug them in.

I typed

If your computer is 4 years old, then it does not have USB.

But meant to type

If your computer is 4 years old, then it does not have USB2.

My bad...my apologies.

Bobby

Four years is very old for a computer.

USB 2.0 was not commonally installed at the hardware level
on laptops four years ago. List the model of your computer
and somebody will likely look up the specs for you.

As I said, you can get a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card which can be
slipped into the card slot.

I've always liked blondes, redheads and brunettes.
Everybody should be able to take a joke and laugh at
themselves.

How do I enter BIOS setup?
What is the "USB Stuff"?
How do I make sure it's enabled?

Note: I'm using the USB ports now. I just don't know if they're
1.1 or 2.0.

A four year old Sony laptop probably has USB 1.1. You can
open the Device Manager and look at the USB section to see
if it lists an Enhanced USB controller. If it doesn't, then
you have USB 1.1.
Each different computer maker selects the combination of
keys needed to open the BIOS. Look in your manual for BIOS
or setup. In all cases, you press some key before the
computer boots into Windows immediately after turning on the
power.

Download one or both of these programs, that will scan your
computer and give you a report on everything installed.
They are free
Bel Arc Advisor www.belarc.com
EVEREST www.lavalys.com

While you are reading your manual, if it doesn't say USB 2.0
you probably don't have it.
