Dumb about direct cable connections.

I have recently purchased a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine from Dell. I
have a Windows 98

machine that I have been using for a couple years. I want to network
them with direct cable.

I purchased a cable with serial connectors on each end and an adaptor
to make it a crossover cable.

I have two serial ports on the Windows 98 machine and I tried both.

I used XP software for preparing the Incoming connection and the direct
cable connection between the two machines.

I looked at the network connection on the Windows 98 end and I
understand I will be using Client for Microsoft Networks and File and
Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks, but I am confused from here.

My questions are as follows:

Am I wrong or is the dial up modem on the W98 machine totally
irrelevant to the direct cable connection? If it is not, I am aware
that there is a need to upgrade the modem driver for the Lucent Win
Modem as I understand there are incompatibility problems with XP.
I tried to assign internal IP addresses, but I guess I would need two
NICs to operate this way. I get my Internet dial up IP address
automatically from my service provider and it is an APIPA address.
Must I use an IP address on the W98 machine which is no longer
connected to the Internet? If I do not, I guess I cannot use TCP/IP
for the direct cable connection.
In the Windows 98 software for a connection it offers either share
level access or User-level access. I want the latter and I did create a
user between the two computers with the same password, but I cannot
get the "Obtain list of users and groups from" section to work.
Must it take the user names from the XP or host computer? It
wouldn't accept the path to the user settings on the W98 computer.

When I try to connect to the XP from W98 by clicking connect on the XP
network connections window I get error 777. It suggests the modem or
other medium to the W98 machine (remote machine) is out of order.

Obviously, I do not understand something. If anyone can see a glaring
problem in my approach to a direct cable connection, please let me know
what I am doing wrong. Thanks.

You probably need to go to the below links and do some reading on
the subject. Not too difficult to setup, but some things depend
on who is the client and who is the host and such.
