Duff drive affects stability ?

Symptom - system periodic freeze. Power-off to close/re-start even after
complete "clean" reload

HP system includes DVD and CDRW drives, drives M and N ( there are no drives
D thru L )
Drive M (CDRW) reports "faulty" in System manager - powers up, does not
recognise any disk.

QUESTION Would this faulty drive (which was at the end of the ribbon cable)
cause system crashes, or should I be looking elsewhere ?
At this point there is little software loaded and no internet access.

I have physically removed the faulty drive, connected DVD drive at the end
of ribbon cable.
At this point, DVD drive becomes the expected D drive. System now appears
stable.

Appreciate any thoughts - Len

Hi Len,

"Freezes" are usually caused by faulty hardware. If removing the drive
causes this behavior to stop, then I'd say you found your faulty piece.
You're lucky, as often its something a bit more complex like a bad processor
or motherboard (and there's a bit more to replacing them).
