THinking about building a new computer, the original plan was to wait a
couple of months for some more intel core 2 duo mobo's tp come out but
recently I have read about the quad core processors from both amd and
intel.

does anyone have any idea of when these will be affordable to home users
? or are the quad cores gonna be aimed at servers for the time being ?.

I know when to build is very subjective, you are never future proof and
prices always drop a few months after your build.

at the moment I have the following

amd 3000
1 gb ram
GF 6660GT

I don't want to upgrade the vid card until the next year (i always skip
a generation, voodoo2 -> geforce 2 -> GF4 -> GF6660GT), should I save my
money and build the whole computer next year ?.

Its a dilemma for me because I really want a dual core system, i always
have more than one application open at one time so I really think I
would benefit.

Any advice appreciated.

What socket is your AMD 3000? If it is socket A you will most likely be
forced to purchase a new video card because I assume you have an AGP
card now. That's one of the reasons I haven't upgraded yet...That being
said even if it's an A64 3000+ and you have PCI Express video the new
Core 2 Duo (conroe) chips are very nice and if you want to build a SFF
system the Core Duo (yonah) and mATX board runs fast and quiet. As far
as quad core goes; Main stream programs are just starting to use the
power of Dual Core. I think the Core 2 Duo's are great chips and if you
can afford the E6700 I am sure you'll be happy with it. Also, what are
you're main uses for the computer.
