Sometimes the desktop appears on the 2nd monitor, but
if i change something, anything in the control center, it vanishes.

Thats pretty much annoying and it takes alot of tries to make
the desktop to appear again on the 2nd monitor.

Is Ati as stupid as Nvidia, or can this be fixed ?

I use ATI Tray Tools to control dual monitors and have no issues. Try
that. Get the prog from http://www.guru3d.com

Am I mistaken if I think I can get a full desktop on each of two separate
monitors
where one is at a different resolution to the other, instead of the lower
resolution
one getting a close up of the desktop?

You can do that. Set second monitor to clone mode, go to desktop
properties/settings, select the monitor of choice by clicking on the
icon diagram of the monitor and set the resolution to what you want.
