Is it possible to use onboard sound at the same time as a pci soundcard? I
want to have my system sounds coming through my monitor's base speakers,
while have Winamp and WMP film and music sound and TV card sound coming
through the pci soundcard into my main speakers or hi-fi system.

Can't stand having Windows errors and mail notifications blasting out at
high volume anymore. I'm using WinXP.

Turn the Windows system sounds off?

audio editor.

This isn't feasible with the programs I use. I use a CAD program, for
example, where the sounds help me to know what mode has been activated.

So, nobody here has tried this?

It's not only Windows that makes sounds, and the sounds in programs are
there for useful reasons.

I know that it is possible to route programs like Winamp through different
audio devices, and that using dual pci soundcards is possible.

The reason I am asking this in a harware forum is that I need to know if
onboard sound can work while there is a pci soundcard in the system, or if
it is disabled like with onboard graphics.

It's a big maybe. It's often possible, but not always, depending on the
implementation. In short, try it.

Once you get it working, you can configure Windows' default sound device
to be the onboard sound, then set WinAmp and other similar applications
(which give you the option of which soundcard) to use the PCI soundcard.

I've done the same in the past, and will be doing so again when/if my
DELL Soundbar shows up.

Yes, providing there are no unforseen problems (which of
course I can't enumerate for you or they wouldn't be
"unforseen"), you can use two sound cards and/or one card
and one integrated sound "device". It's still up to you to
assign how they get used, in other words having the audio
player that allows choosing it's output.
