Installing 2000 in a neighboring primary partition to
win98 I am sure on a previous occasion all the requisite
info was extracted from the 98se volume so as to deliver a
fully working 2000 with all driver, programme and deskop
material .

But trying today with 2000 Pro I have reached a virgin
state, needing every driver & prog to be reinstalled.

Would 2000 Home edition behave as required ?

Microsoft does not relase a product named Windows 2000 Home Edititon. We do
have Windows XP Home Edition.

As to your question, I am a little confused about the process you followed.
It appears that you installed to a different partition. If this is correct,
none of the current Operating systems Microsoft releases would import
applications and user settings from one seperate installation into a clean
installation on a seperate partition. The only way you would get these
results is if you ran an upgrade of Windows 2000 over your exsisting
installation.

Thanks, but there is a "less than Pro 2000", would that
do ?

Would an "upgrade" extract the info and leave the 98se
intact.

I did the operation experimentally with 2000 and XP and
was impressed the way each pulled in what was needed. I
realised I had to get my 98 absolutely right before in was
done in anger - but never got to that stage.

BTW all my installed progs are in a separate logical
within the extended partition, only those things MS
insists in putting in C: are there.

Less than Pro 2000??? What are you talking about?
It's Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server,
Windows 2000 Advanced server, etc.
I think you are confused with Windows XP which has a Pro
and Home version.
If you want to build yourself a dual boot system I suggest
you start with www.google.com and sarch for dual boot. You
will find tons of "receipe". Further more, be advised that
2000 will not run on any computer. Your hardware must meet
the HCL (Hardware Compatibility list)

There is no way to install 2000 or XP to a clean partition and have it
import settings from an existing partition that you wish to use in a Dual
Boot scenario. The only way to have settings from 98 SE imported to 2000 or
XP, would be to upgrade your 98 se to 2000 or XP, but this would mean that
you no longer have a version of 98 SE as it would have been upgraded by 2000
or XP.
