Backup any data you want to keep to CD-R.
Set your CD-ROM as the first boot device in the BIOS(press Del,F1,F2,it
depends, usually Del)
Save and exit.
Boot from the Windows XP CD.
Delete all existing partitions. All data will be lost.
Create at least two partitions. One of at least 5GB for the OS, the
remaining space for data.
Format C: aka Partition1, with the NTFS file system.(not quick)
Install Windows XP.
When booted in to Windows XP, you can format the other partition.

I just reread your post. Assumimg Windows 98 is on C: and Windows XP on D:,
delete just the Windows folder on C: You can also edit the boot.ini file.

He said, "Bring on a brand new renaissance
Cause I think I'm ready
I've been shaking all night long
But my hands are steady."

That's making a mountain out of a molehill! Here is
a far less destructive method:

1. Boot into Win98
2. Start an MS DOS Prompt.
3. Type this command
echo %WinBoot%
Make a note of the folder name returned by the command.
4. Boot into WinXP
5. Start a Command Prompt
6. Type this command:
set SystemRoot
Make a note of the folder name returned by the command.
I assume it is different from the folder name returned under
3. above. If it is the same, post again.
7. Rename the folder name from 3. above to something else.
8. Wait a week. If all is well, delete the folder renamed under
7. above. That's the end of Wind98!

That's a bit more reasonable . . .
