Dual Layer DVD Movie Question

This is hopefully doesn't sound like a dumb question but here goes. I have a
dual layer DVD +R drive. When a movie is created using both sides of the DVD
and the DVD Rom drive is only a single sided reader, what happens when you
get to the end of one side of the disk when playing the movie, does it just
end and you ultimately have to flip the disc over to the other side to see
the rest? is there a start-up issue on the other side of the disc once it's
flipped over? or does it just continue where the movie left off? Was always
curious about this.

thanks

Dual layer is not two sided...it's one layer over
another on the same side.

Have you ever been watching a DVD movie and
the movie would freeze for a couple of seconds?
That occurs when it switches from one layer to the
other.

BTW, you must have the correct DVD media to
utilize Dual layer burning.

Maybe the following article will offer some useful info:

Dual layer DVDs are not flipped over, by name they are dual-layered; meaning
there are two layers on one side - just at different depths and therefore a
different wavelenth is used to burn and read from them. Thay can only be
read by dual-layer capable DVD players.

Your last questions is 100% correct! Don't you worry for the rest questions because all DVD Players manufactured during the last
years will play dual layer (DL) DVD and you've already watched most commercial DVD movies with DL which you never notice it
because you never read the fine prints.

Cheers!

Hello,

I run two dual layer burners. A dual layer disk is not the same as a dual
sided disk. Some movies come on these disks and part way through you have
to take the disk out and turn it over.

You will need software that understands Dual Layer disks. The latest NEro
version 6 does...and makes pretty good DVD out of Movie Maker files. Early
dual layer burners had problems at the interface between one layer and the
next causing them to sometimes fail or give you a big gap where the video
froze....Sony burners do not do that when used with TDK disks or any other
good brand. I have used one other brand but cannot be sure of the name...I
think it was Memorex

DO NOT use cheap dual layer disks...I made the mistake of buying
some...unbranded stuff, every one failed....I threw away around 18 - 20 of
them without bothering to try..all the previous ones failed to play
anywhere other than the original machine and sometimes would not play their
either.

John - thanks for the response. What dual layer DVD's do you generally use?
TDK? Just want to ensure that I'm purchasing what is considered "high
quality" items.

thanks

Hello,

Yes I use TDK, but any top brand name should do the job for you. My Dual
Layer drivers are Sony D22A (That's an OEM designation) Some call these
things "White Box"...yes it did come in a white box :)

Nero gives the ability to create a "Long Lead Out" at the interface between
layer one and two. I have tried with this feature turned on and off. I do
not see any difference in resulting disk on any of my players but as most
of my players are fairly new it may be that it makes no difference. The one
old player I have will not play any Dual Layer disk other than those
created commercially. Its possible though that those disks are not quite
what we call Dual Layer any way...so that may not be a good comparison.

Don't get too excited with Dual Layer. It has already been superceded with
the new "Blue Light" drives. Blue is a higher frequency than red..so for
any given area you can get more data on a blue light disk than you can on a
red light disk. Blue light drives already exist. I have not seen any on
sale and do not know when they will be freely available. I'm told that you
will be able to put several full length movies on just one disk

Plextor made my dual layer DVD burner and they put a list in the owner's
manual of recommended blank DVD providers and that list is updated on their
web site.

Hello,

That would be useful...do you have the appropriate URL ?
