Did anyone see this...or is it invisible....

I repeat a dual core pc for £299...

Looks cheap I suppose - but remember it is an Acer :D

......you could build one for around that or not much more with quality componants ;)

good specs good price
but surely dual core will not function 100% in an operating system like windows xp

prehaps it was more designed for vista

whats your thoughts?

Dual Core was in fact designed for Crunching;)
Quad Core of course will enable even more good work to be carried out.
Honest, thats the truth & i'm sticking to it:p

Sorry but i wouldn't touch that if you paid me.

An equation.

Acer + Comet = Not very good.

And that's being polite :)

Go on then Ady I'd like to see you and all the details of the quality components you will use...

Obviously I must of been off planet or something for the last few weeks as it seems like everyone building super quad core pc's for a hundred quid...Oh well next time I won't bother...:(

crazylegs, I wasn't having a go mate, and I certainly wasn't saying I could build a quad for a few hundred quid - its costing me far more I can assure you

For some that rig may do them just fine - just pointing out it may not be as big a bargain as it seems on the face of it mate, especially as we don't know what mobo/graphics/ram is being used :)

Its 0400 and I'm off to work shortly - but here's what I came up with quickly at overclockers uk without searching around elsewhere for offers etc - I would imagine I could get a bit better and cheaper if I had more time:

OcUK Value 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory Dual Channel Kit £76.36

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 160GB 6V160E0 SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM £39.94

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail £92.81

Asrock AM2NF3-VSTA (Socket AM2) AGP Motherboard £39.94

Liteon DVD-8900 16x DVD±RW/RAM (Black) - OEM £18.79

Antec NSK6500 Super Midi Tower Case - 430W PSU (CA £69.31

Sapphire ATI Radeon 7000 64MB DDR TV-Out (AGP) - Retail (110031720R) £19.96

Total: £357.12 inc VAT

I did the same thing last night Ady, forgot about it until i checked the site and saw it all in my basket!

Your set up is almost perfect, but the memory is only DDR and wont fit in that board. But will let you off due to it being 4am. Funny, thats when i went to bed after a game of CoD with the BBF lot. :D

Heres mine.....

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail - £92.81

Gigabyte GA_M55_S3G Plus (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £61.09

Corsair 1GB DDR2 Value Select PC5300 Dual Channel Kit (2x512MB) (VS1GBKIT667D2) - £84.59

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 160GB 6V160E0 SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM - £39.94

NEC AD5170 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM - £19.96

Antec NSK4400 Mini Tower Case - 380W SmartPower PSU - £50.51

Total - £348.90 inc VAT

I stayed with onboard graphics, like the original pc and picked a decent PCI-E motherboard for upgraded purposes.

I know its not 300 quid but i would gladly pay 350 for that system if i needed it. :)

Just back from work at 9.30pm - a 16 hour shift - back at 5am :(

Not bad VR, but we musn't forget the OS though!! ;)

The main point I would make is that that the Acer rig would be fine for someone doing basic internet/word processing (and lets not forget crunching) - but I doubt it would be any use for gaming - it doesn't say whether its 939 or AM2 either, so any future upgradability would be limited I suspect.

Thats a long day mate!

Damm totally forgot about windows....Linux!?? :D

I agree with what your saying though, thats the problem we face when buying off the shelf. At least from most places. :)

Ok guys sorry about the outburst..(I dunno what came over me had an off day I think)..:o

Yeah you both came up with good systems there for a little over 50 quid more...

I spose your average bod out there would be glad of it though for general pc use and internet...

Again I do apologise for my manner...Most unlike me...

crazylegs, there is nothing to apologise about mate - you have rightly pointed out a system for a cheap price that would probably suit someone on here for general use who isn't able to build one themselves :thumb:

If you find any more then keep posting 'em
