Dual channel memory

Not having "dual channel" memory, can someone who has explain something.....

If you want 2GB of dual channel memory (as it would show up in your OS) , do
you have to buy 4GB (so you have 2GB per channel) of DIMMs or SIMMs or
whatever?

Is it a mobo function? i.e. if a mobo supports "dual channel" memory can you
select dual or single in the bios (based on the above assumption) so that
you can select the choice of 4GB showing up in your OS) or 2GB dual channel
showing up.

No. If you want 2gb dual channel, you buy 2 agb dimms and put them in
the appropriate slots. If you want them to be in non-dual channel
mode you put one in an inappropriate slot.

With dual channel uses the databus of 2 memory modules in parallel, giving
you higher bandwidth.

To get 2 gb of dual channel memory you just have to buy 2 1 gb modules. Most
stores sell them in pairs.
