dual channel DDR really better?

Planning to buy a new motherboard with 856 chips supporting FSB800
probably Asus P4P800 (non-Deluxe) version
is it wise to buy use Dual Channel RAM? or in other words, how big is the
performance difference compared with the price difference?

You REALLY need to use the dual channels of ram provided with these
chipsets. With a P4 there is a MAJOR performance increase. Whether or not
"dual channel ram" is required rather that just 2 sticks of matching ram is
something I can't really coment on for that specific board.

Of course, there is a major performance difference. How it affects your
daily life is however depending of your applications.
You should however pay attention to the type of mem modules you purchase.
They should be paired (Twin modules for Corsair) and if you want the max of
performance, check for the certified cas settings (cas2 or 2.5 or 3, where
cas 2 is the fastest).
Check your Email, I send you some Sandra benchmarks I did with my PC,
equipped with a P4P800, Pentium 4 2.4 GHz 800 MHz and a pair of 512 MB
Corsair DDR3200 mem modules. FSB overclocked at 245 MHz and rock stable.
