it's best to install each OS on it's own partition.

the best way to do it is to start with the oldest OS first
then work your way up...

it is possible to install win98 after XP...
but it can be a bit complicated and will prob. require a repair of the
bootloader

It's a wasted effort. For starters, you cannot
dual-boot Windows 98 and ME. If you wish,
consider dual-booting Windows 98, Windows
2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista
(when it becomes available nest year).

Each operating system must be installed on separate
partitions.

It's to get sure, that no one of thoose OSes becomes too possesive to
the architecture ;-). They'll be installed as platonically extensions
- to be used at holyays - and shouldn't overlap other disk-localities.

All right?

You need a boot manager to manage all that. Most distros of linux have one
built in. Another solution if you have a fast machine with lot's of ram is
virtual machines. Microsoft Virtual PC or Virtual Server or VMWare would all
work.

One of the rare cases, for which further information is required.

I was wondering, nobody had asked me since yet.
