Dual boot

I got a second hand hard drive and would like to run my
music composition tools on an uncluttered platform. Can I
run xp from two hard drives with a prompt at power up
asking which drive I want to boot to? If that's too lame
a question, what's the best reading to do on the subject?

Yes, you can do it. Install the second drive, boot with the XP disc, and
then choose a new install. Specify the second disk, and off you go - XP
will create a boot manager with both versions listed.
