I have an old machine with XP in C:\ (NTFS) and would like to install Me into
drive E:\ which is formatted FAT32. Can I do this from install CD? (Vista
gives an option and I have dual booted XP in C: and Vista in E: - not sure
Me does? - do not want to ruin C:)

Youre best bet is to unplug all addon hardware + C: drive,w/o unplugging,
the installation of any OS software sometimes gets on the wrong hd.ME has
enough problems as is....

you must install the older version of windows first then the newer..

now you are talking about the opposite and you will lose the capability to
boot into XP if you do that...

you may install windows Me and then using the XP disk to repair the
bootloader using the recovery console of XP

that will detect both versions of win and add them to the XP bootloader

read here .. but it is not without some risk if you have never done this
before..

Just for my education, what is the procedure that is more difficult?
Thanks all for feedback

Why not use a boot manager to get each OS in its own C-drive?

You can even assign a shared D-drive for the two systems, and create
backup images of your systems for easy reinstallation of your OS.
