been running xp on c drive.
installed new internal hard drive d: and loaded 2k pro.
cant get system to boot into xp now. when i choose it i
get a problem loading 2k and it says to check
WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMd and to reinsert 2k system
disk.
if i tell it to start in 2k it does so with no problem
except that it wants to format anything i put into the cd
rom drive. which means i can not run either xp or 2k disk
again.

any suggestions to have both bootable and or to fix cd
issue.

Strange, but could be explained. Since Windows 2000 is earlier edition, it
perhaps will not recognize XP. Just like before with Microsoft, you should
install first DOS, then Windows 3.1, then Windows 95.

Since its already screwed up, try to back up any data you have then do this:

Disconnect (ATA/SCSI) cable from one of your hard drives, erase it (write
zeros), partition it (I'm sure you don't want one big hard drive), install
either XP or 2000.

Now, disconnect this drive that you just installed windows to, connect back
the other drive and follow the above to install your other windows. This
way you would have two independant windows installations. You can boot
either one via your bios, F9 key boot menu if available, if not enter bios
and specify boot device, it's better this way.

When installing like this, in each windows installation you can specify
drive letters for all drives but your system drive, administrative tools ->
computer management -> disk management.

A word of caution: if you using dell, compaq, ibm, or other limited
capability system, you may not be able to select boot device from bios as
hardware and bios on those systems is most often outdated, has limited
features.

P.S. From my previous experience with Windows XP Home I felt that it is
useless, thus I'm using Windows 2000 Professional instead and not planning
to go to XP anytime soon. Why would I downgrade?

However, I have somewhat above configuration of Windows 2000 Professional,
Caldera DR-DOS, and Windows 98 for games. (I used a $10 used maxtor for
those)

thing is i have disconnected the d: drive with 2k on it.
and the system will not boot into xp. get the same
message.
so right now if i erase d: and 2k on it then i will not be
able to do anything.
currently have bios set to boot to cd but the 2k install
fubar'd that area also. when cd shows up on the start it
lists failure next to it.

There is a simple reason: The Win2000 boot files are not
capable of starting WinXP. You must replace them with
the XP versions. After you have done this, you will be
able to boot into Win2000 and into WinXP. Do this:

- Boot your machine with your WinXP CD
- Select "Repair" when prompted.
- Select "Repair boot environment" when prompted.

That's all!

Indeed - if you can get to it! You may have to give the OP
a step-by-step guide of how to do it on an NTFS system
partition.

Or just copy NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM from the XP CD's I386 to c:\

Log in using the recovery console after booting off the XP CD

To make Windows XP bootable, boot from the XP installation CD and run
the recovery console. Copy ntdetect.com and ntldr from the XP CD to
C:\.
