Old setup moved to partition 2 boots fine as C: but the new setup on
partition 1 is D: and accessible.

Q: What can be done to dismount, hide or otherwise remove access to
the new setup (D:)

Story:
C is a Generic 7200, lets call it COLD. its win2k
D is a WD800JB for data

COLD has way too many applications and development tools on it (60+?),
plus many others added and removed over the years.

COLD had become noisy and whined at times. Got a WD2500JB to replace
it. Lets call it NEW.

Installed a Fresh Win2k on NEW partition 1 (40gb)
Ghosted COLD to a NEW partition 2 (40gb)

Edited NEW Boot.ini to be
-----
boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Fresh" /
fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Ye Olde
Kruftage" /fastdetect

When I boot to Fresh NEW is D:. Don't remember changing the drive
letter in Disk Management, but I guess it should be doable.

When I boot to COLD (Kruftage), it is C: and NEW is D:
I want to keep D: totally clean and away from COLD. Disk management
won't let me remove D:

What would be needed to boot either COLD or NEW so they are C: and the
other is invisible ?

Eventually the most important things on COLD will be installed on NEW
and COLD deleted.

My suggestion (for you), would be to TAKE ANOTHER 'TOOT".

Sleep On It !!!

And try to put "Thought" to "Word" - Again - tomorrow.

:-)

To boot into one of several OSs while keeping the other ones
invisible and inaccessible you need a proper boot manager.
XOSL is one of those and it's free. However, you must install it
a) in a dedicated 15 MByte FAT or FAT32 partition, or
b) in an existing FAT/FAT32 partition

Some people use a small old hard disk just for the purpose
of installing XOSL. It can be the secondary slave disk - XOSL
does not care.

Warning: If you intend to play with boot managers, practise
on some spare disk until you know your business. If you don't
then you might lose the lot.

Use Disk Management to remove the drive letter from the partition you
don't want to access.

If you want NEW to be C:, its partition has to be assigned C: during
Windows 2000 setup. How do you achieve this? Make sure that the
motherboard BIOS is set to boot from the disk that NEW is installed
on. The Windows 2000 setup screen that shows the disks and their
partitions shows the drive letters that are assigned to all of the
partitions, so there should be no surprises after Windows 2000 is
installed.

I would have just suggested just using Microsoft's "Virtual Machine/
Computer" on the Original Install of Windows 2000, it this person
wanted to Create a secondary Windows 2000 Environment.

Personally, I had no idea why this person wanted to refer to the
original C: Drive as "Cold" ???

8- ?
