Dual Boot - Both Win XP

H

Haz

First of all, am I on the right newsgroup?

Blue screened my WinXP SP2 system. After much fooling around and minimal
advice, reinstalled plain Jane original version of XP off the repair disk.

Original XP on C:\ drive, second XP installed on separate partition H:\
H version works OK ( but makes me cry when I see how many of my tweaks that
aren't there.)

Fortunately, I had backed up My Documents just prior to the disaster.

The question is - is there any way to get the version that works (H) to
replace the corrupt version still on the C:\ drive???

I really don't want/need a dual operating system setup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"setup_deployment" would be the most appropriate NG.
You might be able to do a repair install over the corrupted
OS on the C: partition, but I'm not the one to tell you how.

It's possible to move Windows from H: to C: but it's a lot of mucking
around, with a fair risk of failure. Since you have only just installed it,
I recommend that you re-install it it on drive C:, perhaps in a folder
other than c:\Windows. Alternatively you coul try to repair your existing
installation as Timothy suggested.

What is setup_deployment?

microsoft.public.windowsxp.setup_deployment

It's just another NG for Windows XP, dedicated
to problems with getting XP going.

Thanks Peg -
I tried the repair/reinstall routine a couple of times. No joy.

Is there a way to just remove my corrupt XP on the C:/ drive? Then maybe I
could reinstall/move/whatever the new XP with some hope of it working. \

BTW, if I reinstall onto C:/ but into a different folder, after making that
the default folder, would I be able then to get rid of the corrupt one?

I also vaguely recall that my backup of My Documents (or anything else for
that matter) can only be restored to the same drive (C:/) Does that sound
correct?

Appreciate the help

You can remove the bad WinXP installation by deleting
the folder c:\Windows. You can do this either now or
after installing a new version of WinXP into a different
folder on drive C:.

You can restore My Documents to any location you
like but you must also nominate this location in "Properties"
of your desktop shortcut called "My Documents".

Thanks, I'm beginning to breath again. This has been a terrible scare. Couple more questions if I might:
1) Snip

Is it that easy? I assumed that would not make any changes in the registry, if in fact any are necessary (I wouldn't have any idea.) I did run across a reference (in ms KB 313859, which itself is a little off target) to a routine c:\windows\system32\osuninst.exe. Is that any better/worse than a simple delete?

More very good news, but how do I do that?

If you're beginning to wondering what you are working with here, you're right - I'm in way over my head. Looks like we're just about there, though, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate that.

Thanks again

Each Windows installation has its own registry. It is not affected
by the presence or absence of another Windows installation. It
follows that no change to the registry is required when removing
a parallel Windows installation.

I urge you to start using your right mouse button. It is always
used when you wish to examine or alter the "properties" of an
entity. To change the "properties" of the "My Documents"
shortcut, you right-click the "My Documents" shortcut. To
set a screen saver you right-click a blank area on the desktop.
And so on, and so on.
