dual boot after effect

recently added another drive and put 2k on it. original
drive has xp.
neither when in xp or 2k can i use the cd rom drive. they
indicate they want to format whatever disc i have in there.
tried uninstalling the cd from both profiles and that did
not help. there are no drivers to roll back on. when the
system starts it does indicate failure after it passes the
atapi cd rom.

any suggestions?

Try this: Run regedit, then go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/MountedDevices/

Delete all keys which look like "\DosDevice\<DRIVE_LETTER>:"

This will force Win2000 to reset the properties of each device.
It won't hurt your existing hard drives.
