I have installed WIN98 and WIN2000 in different partitions
(C: / D: , same HDD. I need to format C: (WIN98) due sound
board issues.

Will I loose my WIN2000 boot option ?

Thank you!

Greetings,

Why do you "need" to format C:?

Is it a driver issue, etc?

Kindest regards,

James

Yes, you will. Here is how you can maintain the Win2000
boot option:

1. Save the hidden files c:\boot.ini, c:\ntldr & c:\ntdetect.com
to drive D:.

2. Get a free copy of bootpart.exe from
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gvollant/bootpart.htm

3. Format drive C: and reload Win98.

4. Boot into Win98

5. Restore the files you saved in Step 1.

6. Do a clean boot (press F8) and run this command:
bootpart winnt boot:c:
You have now restored the Win2000 boot sector.

7. Run this command:
bootpart win95 c:\win98.sys "Windows 98"
You have now created a Windows boot sector file. You have
also added a "Windows 98" boot item to boot.ini

8. Hide the following files so that you do not delete them by
accident:
c:\boot.ini
c:\ntldr
c:\ntdetect.com
c:\win98.sys

Would that work to add Win98 after a Win2000 install? A friend wants to add
Win98 to his Win2000 system to run some old games. He has a second hard
drive he can use for the Win98 installation (would be drive D).

It would indeed.

The boot files for Win9x must be on c:
(io.sys, msdos.sys, command.com & the
boot sector files that bootpart.exe manufactures,
win98.sys). The rest can be somewhere else.
