Hi.
My girlfriend's got dso exploit trouble on her pc. I understand that CW
Shredder is the only tool that will get rid of this problem, but I can't
find a currently functioning download link that will work for it. Any idea
where I can get CW Shredder from now... or something else that will tackle
this dso exploit problem? Thanks.

How do you know she has it? Is SpyBot S&D finding it, repeatedly?

yep, and it just bounces straight back, plus which, the web browser is
running at about half a mile an hour. Oh, and there also seem to be a load
of unsolicited pictures in the my pictures folder, which have set themselves
up as the screensaver, although this might be something else altogether?

Thanks.

I can't help with your question but would you be kind enough to satisfy my
curiosity and say a bit more about the nature of the trouble. Thanks.

Known issue with Spybot and the DSO exploit

The nature of the trouble? When I run Spybot it comes up with DSO Exploit
as an object, or rather 5 objects. I can remove them, but then bang,
they're straight back if I run it again. My Pictures folder is also full of
pictures that my girlfriend didn't put there, and the pc has designated
these pictures as the screensaver via the settings option where you can set
this folder as your screensaver. Also, the web browser adopted a new
homepage as its default, and the whole system appears to be running at about
half a mile an hour.

I heard CW Shredder was the tool to use, but can't find any active links for
download.

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

There is a patch that I downloaded from Spybot's website that upgrades
Spybot 1.3 to 1.3TX. This fixes the 5 DSO exploit problems.

yep, and it just bounces straight back,

The following is from the FAQ section on the Spybot web site which may
be of use to you. I thought a fix had been released but I can't find
it on the web site.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/36.html

Why does DSO Exploit return?
DSO-Exploit is a security gap in Internet Explorer, Outlook and
Outlook Express. Microsoft did already close this gap with security
updates, so with current Windows updates and patches installed, it
will no longer be a threat to your system.
Spybot-S&D will still detect the DSO-Exploit, but instead of fixing it
for good, it will unfortunately again set an invalid value. Therefore
it will again be found with every scan.
This little bug in Spybot-S&D has already been repaired and the
respective fix will soon be available as a program update.

As ABC has pointed out, this is/was a known problem with S&D. You can
highlight the item, right click and select to ignore in future scans.
After a recent S&D update and having cleared the 'ignore' list on my
PC it is not found any more, maybe S&D have at last got it sorted. I
am using Windows 98.

After you upgrade to Spybot 1.3.1TX, and run a scan, it will once
again find the 5 DSO Exploit listings. Let Spybot "fix" the problems. The
next time you run a scan the DSO Exploits should not be listed.

Spybot 1.3 to 1.3TX. This fixes the 5 DSO exploit problems.

I always have DSO Exploit on my machine. S&D doesn't remove it.

I just started it up and hot the UPDATE button. It downloaded
detection files dates 11-18-04 but Help/About says it's 1.3, not 1.3TX.

Do I have to uninstall/download/reinstall or did I just happen to hit
a stale mirror site ?

I have XPSP2, plus whatever patches MS gave me a week ago. I only use
MSIE to hit update.microsoft.com, have a current AV product and am
behind a firewall. I never use Outlook/OE. Why does DSO Expliot keep
comming back ?

I've never seen DSO cause me any trouble.

Hi HistoryFan :-)
There is a patch that I downloaded from Spybot's website that upgrades
Spybot 1.3 to 1.3TX. This fixes the 5 DSO exploit problems.

On a different note on this, it would appear that they may not have yet
gotten the problem completely resolved. I downloaded and installed the new
SpyBot patch a week ago, and on my very first run I got DSO Exploits (3),
and again on the second run today, 3 more. I am not the only one who has
had this situation, and actually, I installed it simply as a test to see if
it would happen on my machine too. I have W2K SP4, a new installation on a
new hard drive only 2 weeks old. So, I don't think this new patch works
fully up to par yet. :-)

Are you letting Spybot "fix" the DSO Exploits?
