DSL: Upload/Download time?

Being new to DSL, I am still not clear on why it takes longer to attach a
file to an outgoing email than it does to download that same file upon
receipt of that same email. An 8 MB file takes up to 4 minutes to attach to
email. Downloading the same file upon receipt takes 55 seconds. Why?
Thanks.

That all depends on the LEVEL of DSL you have purchased, as
well as how many other people are sharing the service at any
given time

DSL speed is based on the plan you buy, with each plan having
a different speed for BOTH downloads and uploads... with it
being very common for a faster download setting

You need to check with your provider to find out what LEVEL
of DSL service you have

My cable modem service is 3.0Mb down (to me) and 256Kb up (me to the world).
My friends DSL is the same. Down is obviously 12 times faster than up. And,
for now, those are the maximum speeds in either direction here in my local.

My thanks to John and Jerry for your fast reply and good info. I was afraid
that my DSL wasn't working properly, but your answers cleared it up--much
more clearly than the DSL provider did.

In the UK the upload speed is normally 128Kbps whereas download speed can
range from 256 to 5Mb.
