I've gotten my self roped into into installing a DSL connection on a 6 user
P2P network with a mixture of 98 & XP boxes. Presently I have a Linksys
10/100 hub running the network but I have a Dell 16 port switch laying
around. I know I need a router along with a DSL modem, but i'm not sure
where all this goes. What about a firewall? Can anyone shed some light on
the subject or tell this dumd Arky where to find this info?

TIA, Al

Ask your ISP about the modem.

Read the instructions that come in the box with whatever router you buy.
They will tell you how to connect things up.

A firewall is a good idea, but there's an incredible range of choices.
Some routers have firewall capabilities of varying efficacy.

I'm a happy user of the SMC Barricade 7004awbr (and the line in general)
http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Products&pg=Barricade-Matrix&site=c
http://www.smc.com/consumer/dsp/matrix/barricade_matrix.pdf

set your login info for dsl on the barricade.
plug modem into wan on barricade
plug everything else into the lan side of barricade.
your done. (well set up wireless stuff if you want to)

The barricade will dhcp serve ip addresses for the local network, and
provide a firewall.

I'm very happy with mine.

think i paid 50 bucks after rebate...

serves my house with 3 notebooks (mac osX/2kpro/netbsd) and 2 desktops
(w98/mac os 8.1).

i've had friends with wince pdas, and other notebooks come over...no worries.

Very easy installation

Cable--->Modem---->(WAN port) Router/FW (LAN port)---->Dell Switch--->PCs.

Router: I personally use Netgear FR114P's for this type of installation. It
is a router and a firewall and very configurable. I also use SonicWall
where the requirements is a but more rigid. The 114 allows for 2 VPN
pass-through with the latest firmware. If you need any more out of VPN then
I'd suggest the SonicWall or Netgears FVS318. All depends on your budget.

Modem: Ask the ISP. IMO it's better just to rent the one they provide.
Less hassle that way. Put the onus of modem support on the ISP.

Other considerations
DHCP: Your router will provide internal IP addresses. There is no need to
pay for multiple IPs from your ISP.

Desktop Firewalls: I usually suggest against these if a central firewall is
in use. There are advantages but most time it just leads to user confusion
and frustration.

Anti Virus: A MUST and keep it up to date. I personally like McAfee but
Norton and the others are just as good.
