So what would be a decent replacement for an old AT&T DSL modem
wireless router combination gateway thing? A DSL modem plus wireless
broadcast, combination.

Nothing special. Being able to adjust the wi-fi broadcast power would
be nice. And it has to be compatible with my AT&T DSL service.

Thanks.

Actually boosting power can sometimes have a negative effect on signal
strength.

ATT publishes a page about gateways compatible with their DSL and ATT
supported, as do other sites.

http://techtips.salon.com/att-dsl-modem-21856.html What is the Best AT&T
DSL Modem? Although it is possible to use other models of DSL modems
with AT&T's DSL service (and the those with special technical needs may
choose to do so), these modems have the advantage of full technical
support provided by AT&T.
