Have several computers linked to this DSL service.
The WIN 2000 computer will only connect to the service when
the main computer is ON. Is there a way to configure this
computer to detect the modem and use the internet without
turning on the main computer?

You need to tell us what modem you have.

This sounds like you have either an internal modem or a USB-attached modem
(in the "main computer"). This is the typical setup for home-use DSL.

You might want to buy an external Ethernet modem, and a router. That would
allow any number of computers to use the DSL internet service without
depending on the "main computer".
