dsl failing

I've signed up with BellSouth for DSL, had it working, but had to reformat and
start from scratch again.

The BellSouth setup disk isn't working. But as you can see I'm online, but I
have to use task manager and end process on one of the svchost.exe network
service items, there's 2 of them. The one I have to kill is usually running at
50% and the moment it dies, things fly.

I took this to BellSouth [since the setup disk did work previously], but they
got nowhere.

In my network connections folder I have
local area connection 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940),
1394 connection 1394 Net Adapter, and a new one just sprouted calling itself
local area connection Microsoft TV/Video Connection.

That has to be related to my ATI card. Just never noticed it before.

How do I go about fixing things so I don't have to use task manager to stop the
2nd web service running every time I logon to the web when things start slowing
down ?

It isn't slow from the 1st connect, sometimes it runs for minutes b4 it starts
to slow or not connect at all.
It would seem I don't really need to finish the BellSouth setup cause actually
it seems to be running about 10% faster than when I did get it setup with the
setup disk.

Did you try deleting the "local area connection Microsoft TV/Video
Connection." ??

MD
that's the ATI TV. has nothing to do with DSL. and was most likely there
previously when things were working.
Just something I never noticed b4.

Are you running Media Center Edition and watching television on your
computer? If not, do at least disable that TV/Video connection. Then
reboot, see how things work. You can download and run the application
winsockxpfix.exe that will repair a corrupted TCP/IP stack.

I'll try this, but the TV has nothing to do with anything. It's been running
for a long time on DSL before the machine crapped out installing an ATI
upgrade.
Since then I've done a complete reformat and reinstall of the XP Pro OS.

That fixed the svchost thing, I'm back to running at 1-20% max with some high
spikes in task manager performance.

Maybe this is related, maybe not. 3 times just now my newsreader attempted to
connect and retrieve my previous reply [will try that], It cycled thru several
failed attempts. nothing happening with svchost out of the ordinary. Quit
trying and restarted about 3-4 times by hand vs letting the software do the
cycling on and off. And finally it went thru, and when it does go thru things
appear instantly.

I suspect the BellSouth software installs some sort of throttle, and only got
half way installed with this last setup. my news reader can also poll from
BellSouth's, and toast nets NG servers. And since it happened instantly when it
finally went thru, I can't say for fact it grabbed it from bells server, but I
did find previously that bells NG servers were slightly more reliable than
Supernews servers. So except for text groups, I've stuck all the high speed
binaries groups on bells servers, and the text only ones [like this one] on
Supernews, but for some reason it seemed to be trying to grab this from bells
server and failing.

Maybe need to check this news reader and see if some of it's settings didn't
get corrupted. It doesn't require an install, so I normally just move it out of
the way to the 2nd drive whenever I have to do any thing major with the OS,
such as this reformat this weekend. So I suppose it could have become
corrupted, and I just moved the corruption from 1 drive and back.

Anyway's cept for this that I'll eventually track down, thanks that seemed to
clear up the svchost problem.

And it's still working fine. It's normally trash after I fire up task manager.
It's been up all the time replying, and grabbing news groups.. I have to wonder
why they even bother with troubleshooters and a search for help utility in XP
pro. It's never been of any help in past problems. I've always had to google,
or use this group for help...

FWIW: Your help made it into my permanent hint file...

It's Baaack... It fixed the problem yesterday, and it ran for maybe 1 1/2 hours
today before the svchost kicked in at 50% again. I ran your fix program and now
at 0. Might seem it needs to be run in the startups creating a dual daily
boot..

Any other ideas as to why the settings aren't holding ? Hmmmm... I set ie6 to
it's default settings this morning after removing a virus toolbar.

Spose IE6 is causing the trouble ?
