My laptop comes up to the background but the desktop
doesn't display. I could bring up the task manager and it
showed a process called drvexp.exe with 95-100% CPU
utilization.
I was able to cancel this process (it comes back)
several times, then the desktop popped up and drvexp.exe
dropped back to peak at 3-4%.
What is this process doing to eat up so much of the CPU
and why did cancelling it allow the desktop to come up and
the system to work normally.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

TIA

A search for the following shows no results on my machine (which
includes a replica of the W2k install CD, and downloaded SP2,3, &4).
So it's very unlikely that it is a W2k file:
drvexp.exe
drvexp.ex*
drvexp*
*drvexp*

A google for "drvexp.exe" finds no hits.
A google for "drvexp." finds several hits. You might explore those
for clues.

You're positive "drvexp.exe" is correct?

If this is recent, have you installed any apps or device drivers lately?

A google search will usually turn up rogue (virus/spyware/adware)
processes, but...are your antivirus checker and such apps completely
up-to-date? Such a search will also usually turn up occurrences of a
filename in various tech support knowledge bases, installation
instructions, product component lists, and the like.

Don't know what else to suggest. Others here may have seen this before.

Where exactly on your machine (on which directory tree) does the file
appear? What is its date? This seems kind of unusual to me, the more
specific info the better...
