Dropping internet connection

Hi there

Hope someone can help and this is the correct group. I will try to explain
the best I can.

I have a new computer running windows XP, with OE v6 and IE v 6. I have
downloaded all necessary updates as far as I know. I use a zoom
modem/rooter connecting to broadband, my computer is the main one with two
other using wireless connection to gain access to the internet.

After I have been online a short while, or if I leave the computer and I
return to find the log in screen, I find the internet connection has dropped
on my computer, it is accessible still on the others. The only way to get
back on is to restart the computer, as just coming out of IE etc and
reopening does not work. Everything is fine after restart.

Also the settings on my newsgroup accounts keep changing e.g. setting should
be server News.CIS.DFN.DE and it changes to 127.00 etc, which means I then
can't get the newsgroup I wish to access. These setting were originally
exported, but I have reloaded them, I used Norton antivirus previously but
am now using Norman virus control v5.6 which came with the computer.

Even as I have typed this it says the Internet connection has dropped.

Thank you anyone that can help

Some broadband providers will drop a connection if it is not active. PPPoe
connections are configured much like dialup connections. These also can
"time out" if inactive.

For example, I use PPPoe connection with a DSL provider but have configured
the router to keep my connection active. Without a router, a Network
Connection icon would be used to "connect" and "disconnect" whenever I
wanted to log on to my account. I also had to go into properties on some of
the communications hardware and NIC. Using the Power Management page
(when available), they are now set to not go into standby.

Since your other computers stay connected, what is different about them?
Are they logging on to the service with different accounts?

Have no idea what's up with your news server connections. It sounds like
it's adopting the loopback address for no apparent reason. Do you connect
to the server with a newsreader or use a web interface? If a web
interface, check your host file and keep a close eye on it for changes that
you did not initiate.

May want to scan for virus with an up to date antivirus program or at one
of the online scanners:

I didn't have this problem at all with last computer using same broadband
service, one computer networked is running XP the others 98SE, the
connection was always on! The other computers use the same account as
before, the only thing that has changed is that I have a new computer and it
is running XP!

Current antivirus protection is updated and I have scanned. I am waiting to
put Norton onto this machine, but need to put McAffee on another first as I
purchased it as a download and we have swapped computers around at home.

I connect to the newsgroups via the servers.

Thanks

I don't know what else to suggest, M. If it was a problem with the new
computer staying connected, I would expect the other two computers to
lose their connection too. I did understand you correctly that the new
computer is the one hooked up to the router and passing out signals to the
other two via wireless, didn't I?

If I've misunderstood and the new computer is wireless too, may want to
take a look at the settings for 802.1x authentication. It should be disabled if
you don't have an authentication server (most home networks do not).
Open Network Connections
Go to the properties of the wireless network connection
On the authentication tab, remove the check from "enable 802.1x
authentication." Click OK.

Zero Wireless service should be enabled. Also SSDP and UPNP should be
enabled for Zero Wireless and for many routers.
