Sharon, I use Supanet to dial up the connection. I'd just like to be
able to use other programs without having to logoff windows to free up
the telephone line
If Supanet creates an icon in Network Connections, right click on that and
select Properties. In those pages, should be a box to check to put the icon
for the connection onto the taskbar (next to the clock) when it is in use.
When you want to disconnect, double click that icon and click the
Disconnect button.
You could also send that Network Connections icon to the desktop as a
shortcut. Use it from there or drag and drop it into your QuickLaunch bar
for quick access. Double click, to launch the connection. Double click
while connected to bring up a screen with the "Disconnect" button.
You may also want to tweak your Internet Explorer settings. Open Internet
Options to the Connections page.
Setting it to Never Dial, you would use Network Connections (or one of the
shortcuts described above) to initiate and end your connections.
Setting it to "Always Dial my default connection" will bring up the connect
screen whenever you access a feature that uses access to the internet. You
can cancel if you want or go ahead and click OK -- whatever suits your
needs at the moment.
When I still had dialup, I used the "Never Dial" setting and a Quick Launch
shortcut to manage my connections and disconnections.
PS: While typing this, I checked SupaNet's help pages for directions on
connecting and they do create a connection item in Network Connections
instead of using their own dialer program. That means that the above
suggestions will work for you.
Hope this helps,
