Well, I'm never the driver of course, but John & I have done the round trip Dunedin - Christchurch - Dunedin round trip in one day more than once to drop-off/pick up paintings of his from various Gallerys.
That's about 6 hours each way.
Been up to Christchurch via Mount cook once too, not sure how long that is but sure it's not as long as the round trip.
John & I go driving a lot though.
Weekend before last we went down to Oamaru & up over the Dansey Pass. Not sure how far that was, but since the pass road was closed & we were creeping through the ice up the top it was certainly a long trip. Was well after dark before we got home.
Learned something though.
Never knew that John had not seen the high country in person before, he'd seen plenty of piccys of course & thought he knew what it was like, but not the real thing. We were slithering through ice & snow & he was hopping out every few minutes to take photos for painting. It was so funny/cool. Explained a lot though.
You really can't know the high country without going there. It's something in your soul. Gotta take him riding/camping up there when summer comes now I know.
Show him where I came from
.
Have to teach him how to ride though. Need to learn again myself actually, haven't ridden in 18 years. Need to find a station willing to lend us a couple of stock horses too. would never take a lowlands horse up the mountains.
I never knew that he didn't know.
