drives do not read

A short while after I installed Norton Anti-Spam it
began to make problems. Their densely mazed Support site
said I should un-install it, and re-install it. I
uninstalled it. (A couple of hours, apparently, before
Norton put up a fix for the problem.)
When I tried to re-install the program I discovered
that none of my drives will read data files in Normal
Mode. All five have the problem: two CD drives, a Zip
drive, a floppy drive, and a digital Film Reader. The CD
drives will read music files, and they will both burn data
from my hard drive, which is then readable on another
computer. They will all read data files in Safe Mode.
Although, of course, I can't run anything from them in
that Mode, I can transfer files such as digital camera
files to my hard drive, etc. (I am running Windows 2000.)
Symantec online Support has sent me links to a half
dozen of their Support files (files I was aware of - I can
read), but none of them address the problem. It seems to
me that the uninstall dumped a necessary file, but which
one and how I get it back I don't know. Symantec should,
but ain't telling!
What can I do? I can't, of course, easily load
anything from a disk - they won't read. Any ideas?
Symantec seems to have given up - they do not reply to my
update replies to them, and I have the feeling that the
person assigned to me is way over his head.

You'll need to find another way to describe your problem. Telling us "the
drives do not read" tells us nothing. Check Event Viewer and Device Manager
for errors and or non-starting devices. Also you may want to see what Disk
Management has to say about it. Start|Run|diskmgmt.msc

Try looking this up on the Norton site

Error: "Drive <x:> is not accessible. Incorrect function" when accessing
a CD or removable drive after installing Norton AntiVirus

I have done so -- Device manager tells me that the devices are working
properly. Diskmgmt shows nothing at all for anything but the hard drive.
I don't know how else to explain -- when I put a disk into a drive and try
to open it -- by clicking on it in "My Computer" for instance -- I get the
message "F:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." This happens with all
the disks. In Safe Mode I can read some discs, and even load some photo
files ( in simple color, of course), but no programs -- such as
re-installing anything -- will run from them.

One of these may help.

OK -- one of them helped. But now a question about how to procede:
As instructed, I tried to uninstall InCD but it would not uninstall. I
then followed the instructions from Symantec to disable certain features of
Norton Anti-Virus. I did so, and then was able to uninstall InCD. The drives
now work.
But I have been running NAV for a couple of years, and had no problem till I
uninstalled a recently installed Norton Anti-Spam. Now the question is/are:
Dare I reinmstall InCD? Dare I reinstall Anti-Spam?

Note: the "fix" I used was for another problem-- there seems to be no fix
listed for the problem I had.

You'll need to ask symantec support those questions. My experience with
symantec products is that you're pretty much on your own as far as support
goes. Once you get past all the blue-screen stops and operating system
reinstalls their products seem to cause/ require it works good.

Thanks for the help. I have asked Symantec. I await a reply -- but then I
await several replies. You are kinder, or more diplomatic, about Symantec
than my Systems Manager son.
