Drives are not working right (CDRW and Floppy)

This is my second try at a post. The first one did not
show after twenty minutes. (So why do I think this one
will?)

First I had one CDRW that worked fine. Then it began to
be treated like a read only drive. Then I uninstalled
the Nero software to reinstall it, and now it does not
read at all. It does play audio though. Bad CDRW? I
thought that too. I went out and bought another one. It
does the same thing.

Now I have two CDRW drives. Neither will read CDs.
When I put in the installation CD, nothing happened.
When I click on either drive in the explorer a message
shows that the disk (any disk) is not formatted. Both
drives are on the same secondary IDE with the new one as
master and the old one as slave. The Master is closest
to the MB.

No matter what adjustment I make, the result is the
same. If I take one of the drives off, it makes no
difference. If I put the CD drive (in slave mode) on the
Primary IDE, set as primary slave (just to test), the
result is the same. Changing IDE cables does not solve
the problem. The device manager says the device is
working fine and shows the installed driver is by
microsoft: 5.0.2183.1.

Interestingly, I have a zip100 that I have not been able
to make work since I bought the computer (it came from
another computer). It gave the message that no disk was
in the drive. In the process of trying to solve this
issue, I downloaded the latest Zip drivers. That did not
improve things. However, after installing the new CDRW,
I found that the long dead zip now works.

I have tried to make sure the BIOS in correctly set up
making all the settings conform to the ASUS documentation
settings. I used Auto for the devices and it correctly
found the drives. I set the boot order so that the HD
was first and the CDRW was second, the Zip was third.
(But these settings do not seem to make any difference).

System data: The computer is a AMD Athelon processor
circa 9/2000 with a Asus A7V133. The Hard drive has 16gb
free.

The problem would seem to be a driver problem. I have no
idea how to make the correct driver apply. Or even which
driver is the right driver. With my original drive,
I/OMagic, I was told to get the latest adapti drivers. I
did that and that made no difference. They gave me a
link to the latest nero software upgrades, and that did
not help.

As usual, I'm stumped. I am not a computer geek. This
is all new to me. I have tried to use ingorant logic and
it isn't working. Any help would be appreciated.

Since I wrote this, I tried reinstalling the driver for
the drives and one of them is back to Read only. Well,
that is better than nothing.

Good the problem is solved.

The Circumstances: My problem started when I could not
copy to my CD. I deleted the Nero software for my
existing drive and then it would not even read the
drive. I figured it was dead. I bought a new one yours,
and it did not work either. Since emailing, I found my
floppy did not work either.

The Cause: Conflict with Norton Antivirus 2004. (I
don't use this computer much and I was not able to
connect the problem to a recent event. The problem has
probably existed for several months.)

The Solution: Deactivate the setting starting Norton
Antivirus 2004 "Auto Protect" on boot up. It must be
manually set to "Auto Protect" after boot-up. After
doing this I was able to read drives and load Roxio.
This fixed all of my drives, including the one I
replaced. Now I have two.

Thanks Chet!
