I recently installed XP-Pro on a Dell laptop previously running Windows 2000.
The upgrade selection would not work so I was reduced to a new installation. I had to re-install all my software.
THat was a week ago. This morning, when I attempted to install some additional software, I found that the CD/DVD drive was not listed on the file structure and I could not access the drive.
XP's device manager lists's a p roblem with the device. Following the device manager instructions, I tried to update the driver. WHen that didn't work, I tried to un-install thaen re-install the driver. However, the error massage still indicates that the driver will not load and is ither missing or corrupted.
A call to Dell had me boot from the CD using the XP disk in the drive. Since the system does boot from the CD Drive, Dell suggests that the problem is with XP. I've searched the KB and other areas. I did the XP updates with no change in the behavior.
SO here I am.
Anybody got any ideas?

It would have helped if we knew what make your CD\DVD drive was. A simple program that will tell you as well as provide links to most of the manufacturers sites and updates is Aida32. Once you know who made the drive it is simply a matter of getting the updated driver for XP from them. Most provide a self extracting installer inside the driver program to put it in the right place. Good luck.
