I re-installed xp home, When I tried to install EX8, box said: entry point
SHRegGetValueW couldnot be located in the dynamic link library. This is the
same message I get for installing Silver light, service packs etc. Can some
one help? This was my first time putting xp on a hard drive...

What's EX8? Never mind. Did you re-install Windows or did you clean
install Windows? A re-install -- also known as a repair install -- means
you are installing over an existing copy of Windows. A clean install
means you erase your hard drive first. Follow the instructions below.

"How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install"
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

"Clean Install Windows XP"

Did you buy a new hard drive...and you're trying to transfer your
software to the new drive? If you bought a retail hard drive it should
have come with detailed instructions and software to get the job done.
You can also ask the hard drive manufacturer for help, or check the help
available on the manufacturer's website.

You are using those terms very differently from the way many (if not
most) of us do. Not everyone thinks that the word "re-install" means a
"repair install." I don't, for example.

To me, to re-install simply means to install *again*--not for the
first time on the particular computer. Unless the word "repair" is
used, there is no implication that it's a repair installation, and I
would assume that a clean installation is meant.

I've noticed, Ken, that you like to argue with me, particularly on
points of no real importance, and often you are wrong about what I have
written, as you are here.

Do you have a "thing" against me? Something I wrote in the past that
bothered you? Let's out with it then...lets clear the air so we can both
move on.

You seem upset by my comment, and if I upset you, I apologize. No, I
don't like to argue with you at all, and on the contrary, I think that
you are one of the better participants in these newsgroups, and you
generally post accurate and helpful information here. But like all the
rest of us, including me, you are not right 100% of the time.

You say "points of no real importance," but I think that the language
used *is* important, and if it's used improperly, it's very easy for
people to get the wrong idea about something.

You say I'm wrong here. That's your view, and it was clear from your
original post that it was your view. But leaving aside any question of
whose usage of the term "re-install" is the better one, my main point
was simply that not everybody uses it the way you do, and therefore
nobody should rely upon that definition, and nobody should assume that
everybody who uses the term means what you mean by it.

If you say poTAYto and I say poTAHto...you say toMAYto and I say
toMAHto...as long as we explain what we mean there is no problem. So
lets call the whole thing off...

I'll have a Bloody Mary.
That way we'll have *both* potatoes and tomatoes unless Dan Quayle shows
up :)

That's OK with me. Thanks.

After all our adult beverages, you should start by putting the XP
installation CD of the same Service Pack as your installation in your
CD drive.

From a command prompt run:

sfc /scannow

This will attempt to copy in "good" files from the CD to your hard
disk in the event some are missing or corrupted.

If the XP installation CD is SP1 or SP2 and you have SP3 on your
system, they do not match, so sfc /scannow will do considerable
complaining that you will have to answer to - perhaps hundreds of
times as it "ignores" files it can't find on the outdated CD and
therefore not really doing as good of job as it could. Consequently,
your issue may go unresolved since the pieces are not all in place.

If your installation CD is SP2 and your Windows install is XP2, sfc /
scannow may be able to run quietly, perhaps fix the problems, but you
will still be behind in Service Packs. If you install SP3 on your
system later, your installation CD is now less out of date and less
likely to be helpful in problems such as this.

To get sfc /scannow to behave, you must create or acquire an XP
installation CD with SP3 slip streamed into it, a relatively easy
process that just takes a little time and planning. The upside is,
you will not own a vital tool in your troubleshooting toolkit.

If you reinstalled, but whatever method, it sounds like something has
gone horribly wrong, and repairs may be beyond the capabilities of
sfc /scannow and you may have to reinstall again - completely. There
is often some sort of stigma or question mark hanging over a repaired
installation usually resulting in a scorched earth install.

This week I have learned that PWI = Posting While Intoxicated. I like
it.

They did say this site was for newbies....well I am just that. I have
knowledge of the computer but not the wording. Thank you Ken for the
explanation, I did mean that I was putting the OS on a new hard drive. And
Leonard, I meant Internet Explorer 8. Your comment "EX8, What's that, never
mind" was not only demeaning but rude. I have been hunting for days to find
help with this thing and the last thing I needed was to hear that. Your
choice of words sometimes is not the wisest! I do want to thank you both for
the info, I am up and running for the time being. I am not sure it is all
right, but its running...lol. Thank you both for the help!

I all ready had the hard drive, I was just putting OS on that. This was an
extra drive I had just in case. I have been back to the Microsoft site and
have finally gotton the service pack 2 installed, which in turn allowed me to
download and install IE, Media player11, etc. It's running slower now, but
its running.

It's not a website...it's a newsgroup. It's not only for newbies...it's
for everybody.

Nobody here works for Microsoft, and nobody gets paid to answer
questions. This newsgroup consists of other computer users, just like
you and me, who volunteer their time to try to help each other out. That
being the case, the more accurate and detailed questions stand the best
chance of getting the right answer the soonest.

I understand that, but those who are new to this don't know the right
questions or wording. I am learning.

First: I actually don't ride a horse...but I am an enthusiastic bicycler.

An old custom in newsgroups is called 'lurking'. While that sounds
sinister, it means to follow the newsgroup for a while to get a feel for
how things work, before posting a question. It's not unlike following a
group conversation before joining it yourself.

I am glad you are learning. I never stop learning. In my younger days,
most of what I learned was learned 'the hard way.' You're doing much
better than me. ;-)

Thank you and in the future I will read more and try to get the swing of
things. My other hard drive has a virus I guess, so I had to switch and I
won't pay the prices they ask for what I did. I was desperate to get this
thing back running and needed some help. I wil try next time to be more
precise and accurate....thanks again!
