Every time I reboot Windows 2000 on my computer all of my
drivers, my sound, video, and ethernet card drivers are
all uninstalled and i have to reinstall them every time I
reboot. Does anyone know what is causing this and has a
solution to this problem?

Sounds like a problem with the system hive of the registry. Did a
specific action cause this to start occuring? I would run chkdsk /f and
also boot into safe mode one time. If you have a system state backup
resore it. If not you will likely need to boot to recovery console and
replace your system hive with one from your %systemroot%\repair\regback
folder. If you don't have a backup there you will have to use the one in
%systemroot%\repair

No specific action caused this. I tried to run chkdsk /f
but it said that the volume is in use by another process.
I also tried to run it in safe mode but the problem still
occured and the chkdsk /f still said that the volume was
in use. I then searched for those %systemroot% folders in
the registry and in the hard drive but I could't find
them.

Your AV is probably locking the drive before chkdsk can get to it. You can
boot the recovery console and run;
chkdsk /r
from the command line.

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

Ok I booted the recovery console and I ran chkdsk /r. Now
according to a previous post I, "will need to replace
your system hive with one from your %systemroot%
\repair\regback folder. If you don't have a backup there
you will have to use the one in %systemroot%\repair." Ok
so where are these system root files located and how do I
replace them?

thanks

%systemroot% = %windir% = "the windows directory" = probably \winnt

You can rename the system hive found in %windir%\system32\config\system to
system.old

From the command line;
rename %windir%\system32\config\system system.old
then
copy %windir%\repair\regback\system %windir%\system32\config

else if no backups then copy the original-as-installed
copy %windir%\repair\system %windir%\system32\config

You'll need to reinstall the device drivers for any hardware added since the
original OS install.

Ok I booted the recovery console and I typed, rename %
windir%\system32\config\system system.old and copy %
windir%\repair\regback\system %windir%\system32\config,
from the command line. Every time I tried it, however, it
said access denied. Whats going on?

thanks

Have you ever backed up the registry? If not then the directory
%windir%\repair\regback
doesn't exist. Start the OS normally to see if it exists or do the file copy
from a parallel install of the OS. To start the OS normally you may need to;
rename %windir%\system32\config\system.old system
