Hello all,

Well recently a lot of stuff was deleted off my computer,
and now my internet is being stupid. A tech guy for our
cable modem said that some of the dll files may have been
deleted or something...and now the neither the dial-up,
or the cable modem is working...I have absolutely no idea
what to do here short of going out and buying a new
computer. :( Please help if you can!! Thanks so much,

Sincerely,
Jennifer

I have many problems with cable modems myself but besides
not being able to network my house (which may be the
other hardware i have) i have found ways to work around
it. if you are using windows XP it is very internet
friendly, as far as i have been able to see at least...
when i have problems i simply go to start, my computer,
and in the left column click on my network places. ont
the left colum click on view network connections.
hopefully there is only one in there but right click the
active one, click disable. once it has disabled click
enable. this should give you an ip to connect to the
internet. if this doesnt work then after you have tried
that try simply repairing it. if that doesnt work,
sorry... im not computer genious...

There's no need to buy a new PC!! :)

You can use the system file checker to verify if any system files have been
damaged, have your XP CD handy...

1) Go to Start -> Run
2) Type in SFC /SCANNOW and click OK
3) The system file checker will run and check all system files are present
and the version numbers are correct, this step will probably require you to
insert your XP CD to replace any missing or incorrect files.
4) If that still doesn't work, you may need to perform a "repair"
installation, but to do that you will need a proper XP disc and not a
Recovery disc commonly provided with brand name computers these days. If
you don't have a proper XP disc, then your best option is to backup all your
data and use the recovery disc to reset the system to factory condition...
