(Cross-posted to Performance & Maintenance) What can I do
to have Windows Update offer Driver Updates? Currently
Windows Update seems to ignore an inventory of my
existing drivers, because the Windows Update Web page
shows "(0)" for both Critical Updates and Service Packs
and Windows XP if no updates are available. However,
Driver Updates is grayed out and the "(0)" does not
appear. Please let me know. Thanks in advance

My personal experience with driver update from Windows Update: STAY THE HELL
AWAY!!! I have used it on two different PCs and on those occaions, the
Microsoft driver update "crashed" XP. Hell, I even had to do a XP
re-install on top of one the the XP PC.

Microsoft does not write drivers and posts "old" drivers on Windows Update.
Manually record the manufacturers of all your hardware components
(motherboard, video card, network adapter, printer and modem) and visit
their web sites for the updates yourself. This way, you should get the
latest drivers.

Windows Update recommended a modem driver that turned out to be older
than the one I had... and slower.

Although I wouldn't out and out reject their suggested drivers, I'd
investigate as Yves indicates.
