Steve E.

Good day, and thank you in advance for any help.

I have one of the above-named printers and I would like to use it with a
Sony Vaio laptop, many years old but almost unused. The Sony runs Windows
ME, and it seems to run very well.

I can't seem to locate a driver for that OS/printer combination, and the
auto-detect routine in ME did not work.

The HP site does not seem to have a driver, or it is very well hidden, and
I've just done a lot of Googling without success. Lots of sites all want to
download software to review all the drivers but then can't because the OS is
old.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks again.

Is there an entry if you go to Add Printers, then manually look through
the list of manufacturers and models? If you can't find a 5P, earlier
models should work fine.

Thanks to both Andrew and Alain, however, the install routine is asking for
a specific file now - the file name is hppcl5ms.drv - and that file does not
seem to be included in the driver download on HP's site. Trying to install
the printer as a 4P yields the same message from the Installer.

Anything else come to mind? Many thanks...

Steve - I used my HP5p on win98 and XP with no problems. I believe that I
used the original driver that came on disk with the printer. When
installing a new printer on ME does it ask for the driver on disk if it is
not on the list of drivers in the OS? My 5p is still working just fine with
never having had any downtime or repairs. I don't recall when I bought it,
but I think it was 13 or 14 years ago. I recently gave it to a friend,
along with the installation disk, as I wanted a faster printer. I replaced
it with an HP 3005. If I can retrieve a copy of the installation disk I
would be happy to forward it to you.

Burt -

Thank you. The 5P does appear in the printer list, but I do not have the
Windows ME disk - the machine came to me from a woman who was cleaning out
her closet; she gave it to me. I believe that I have the factory installed
OS on the machine, but no disk.

Would appreciate any assistance - I can re-run the install routine to get a
list of the files I need if you want.

Thanks again for your comments.

I can't properly thank you all for your assistance. I've tried each
suggestion, I've downloaded the hppcl5ms file from two sites, I've tried
installing the printer as another type of printer. I even tried a USB driver
using a USB-to-parallel cable. The latest error message is that the printer
can't be installed because the hppcl5ms file can't be opened. Crap...

My last question, if anyone knows, is what PATH should the hppcl5ms file be
installed in; that is, in what folder (under what other folder and so on)
does that file go in? Just in case I placed it in the wrong folder.

Thanks to those who have aided me.

Steve, tell us what OS you are using??????

Using Windows ME and wanting to install a Hewlett Packard 5P. The computer,
while older, is almost unused. A friend gave it to me while cleaning out her
closets. I do not have the Windows disc, however.

Thank you.
