I don't know if I am sking this in the correct group, but here it goes. I
have an older laptop that had Windows ME installed. I have upgraded it to XP
PRrofessional SP3. I am trying ti upgrade the memory, but it is not able to
read it. Right now I have 128MB of RAM and I am trying to add 256MB. When I
turn on the latop, this is the error I receive:
Windows could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt:
system32\drivers\pci.sys

I have tried reinstalling ME to have it read the new RAM, but it doesn't
read it then either. If anyone has some suggestions I would appreciate it.

This may have nothing to do with your operating system at all.

What is the make/model of this machine?
What is the make/model of the memory you purchased to put in this machine?

Have you been to Laptop manu.site to see if any winxp drivers are avilable?
Does it also state max memory? Are there any Bios updates?

I have a Gateway Model Solo 5300.
The memory I am trying to install is
Lifetime Memory Products
256MB PC133 SD SODIMM

It could be that the two memory modules will not work together.

Have you tried ME with just the 256mb module installed?
