An update to the integrated sound card is found when I go to windows update
site. The original driver was installed as part of the motherboard driver cd
installation.
After the driver's downloaded, I get a popup from windows that tells me some
new hardware has been found and it asks for the location of the driver.
I think by this time my original driver has already been deleted. I'm unable
to give info to the driver wizard because I don't know where the update was
downloaded. Im not even sure if I should be receiving this message as other
drivers from an update just seem to install without prompting me.
I reinstalled Windows after this, as I hate a grubby install, and ignored
this driver. But I'd like to know what to do in future.

Always go to the web-site of the hardware Mfg. for drivers. The Windows
update drivers may be outdated or defective. They have caused a lot of
problems for many people who have posted to this and other XP news-groups.

LOL, JAX
