drive types reversed

I use XP SP2 and just now have a problem where in explorer I see that my
DVD-RW has a CD icon and my DVD-CD player has a DVD icon. Also my DVD-RW
now has a volume name the same as a recently burned DVD copy. I cannot
change this name in properties as it says that it is not a valid name even
if I just try to call it DVD. I have not made any hardware changes.

How can I fix this?

Have you tried a REstart of your computer? Or a Shut Down and start again?

What have you done beyond what you described above?

More info would be helpful.

Yes I have done a cold restart. Can't think I've done anything else. Is
the drive volume name stored in the registry?

Maybe someone wrote wrong items into the registry. Drive name and
icon can be set here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\DriveIcons\G

where 'G' is the letter of your drive.
