Drive Problem

I'm hesitant to reply to such a heavy crosspost (I'll get flamed), but need
to ask:

Did you format the new drive?
If your original drive happens to be a Western Digital, it has an unusual
jumper setting, you will need to change the jumper there too.
 
Hello All

I have installed an 80Gb Exelsor (ATA100, 7200 rpm) drive on my system:

AMD XP 2500+ (Barton)
512Mb RAM, HDD - 120Gb (ATA-133, 7200rpm)
Motherboard ASUS A7N8X 2.0 With Pheonix Award BIOS v6.0
Window XP Home (current with updates)

The system performed normally before I installed the drive but after
installing I had a number of problems:

1. The System seemed to slow down - it would take almost 2 mins to load up.
2. In BIOS I do not see any recognisable description for the drive unlike
with my Maxtor drive which I see in English for its description. What I see
for the Excelsor drive is almost hyeroglyphcial.
3. It does not show the correct encoding for the drive size: its show 23468
Mb when it should say something like 80 Gb.

I have the drive set-up as a secondary (Slave) drive and Windows appears to
see it as a 'F' drive but the is about it. Windows Will not write to it
(registering an I/O error whenever I try to) and the system all but hangs
when I try to do anything with the drive.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get around this or is there something
that I am missing?

Yeah, something's stuffed.
1. The System seemed to slow down - it would take almost 2 mins to load up.

Most likely because of a high error rate with the boot drive.
2. In BIOS I do not see any recognisable description for the drive
unlike with my Maxtor drive which I see in English for its description.

Thats evidence of a stuffed drive or the system not
being able to use the drive properly, the hyroglyphics.

Likely because it cant get the size data from the drive properly.

Its probably just retrying for a very long time and that looks like a hang.

Work out where the problem is and fix that.

Make sure BOTH drives are jumpered properly.
You can get some weird effects with bad jumpering.

Try another ribbon cable with 80 wires if the jumpering is correct.

Try the new drive in another system and see if it works there.
If you get the same result, particularly the hyroglyphics, likely
the drive is dead. Try the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic
on the drive, usually from the hard drive manufacturer's web site.

Could be if you didnt do anything about the jumpering.

Sounds to me like the drive is cream crackered mate! 8(
do Exelsor have any diagnostic software? if so i would download this and run
some diagnostics on it or run scandisk in windows and do a thorough check on
the drive.

Sounds to me like you either need to plug it in properly or get it replaced.

I would suggest the former.

I`ve seen this on a drive which had a bent pin, the guy must have pushed the
IDE cable in with a lump hammer and one pin bent and was earthed.

How is your first drive jumpered? It might be jumpered as a single drive.
Make sure the first drive is jumpered as a duel master and the second drive
is jumpered as a duel slave.
 
Disconnect your old drive. Connect your new drive. Start up your computer
with a win98 start up floppy and see if you can fdisk and format your new
drive. Then put it all back together and see what you have.
 
Jumper both drives cable select, put the boot disk on the end of the ide
cable and the slave in the middle, and see if it works.
