I have a new Dell with Vista Home Basic. I have an external USB drive that I
have connected and I'm able to see the drive but not save any data to it. I
am logged on as administrator. I looked at properties for the drive and it
showed the drive was not shared so I set that up but am still not able to
write to it. I'm getting very frustrated with Vista. Anyone have an idea on
what's causing this? I also tried too unistall a program from the PC and
could not get that to work either.
Aaaarrrgghhh!

Has the HDD been formatted yet?

Yes. I used it on my XP system for about a year. Did I do the correct thing
by going into Properties and setting the Sharing & Permissions? Sorry, I'm
not a real PC guru. I'm really getting frustrated with Vista seems to be
soooo mush slooower than my pld PC with XP.
Thanks for the reply,
Russ

You shouldn't need to mark is as sharable because you are not sharing it
with other computers. Maybe you need to change the permissions for the HDD.
I haven't tried my external USB drives in Vista yet but will later. I'm in
XP right now so can't check.

I'm at work and while I do use Vista at work I do have an external USB drive
that works beautifully with no sharing involved. Same for a thumb drive so
that's not the answer. Put in an email to Dell Suppt and will call them after
work.

I managed to contact Dell about the problem and was hooked up with "Dell
Connect" and a support tech. It seems that what I was trying to do was to
save a document to the root directory of my USB drive and Vista does not
allow that. Doesn't like that for any drive whether USB or not! He tested it
while we were connected and if you save to a folder it works. I was afraid I
had really screwed something up. I really appreciate your help. Thank you
very much!

PS - Reset the sharing back to "Not Shared"

OK, good to know. I bet if you changed the permissions to elevated admin
you could save files to the root of the HDD.

Pipboy,
You said > " I bet if you changed the permissions to elevated admin " < How
do I do that?

I've never done it yet and am not in Vista right now but I think you right
click the HDD and select properties and there should be some options there
to change the permisssions.
